How a motion piece is made

First we agree the message in words. Then come the moodboard, the storyboard and the animation.

You see each stage and approve it before we move on. Changes cost little at the storyboard and a lot at the end.

“Their motion graphics work was polished, the final product looked great, and they handled a tight deadline with a very professional attitude.”

What to look for in a motion studio

Ask to see these before you brief anyone.

More than one way to draw

Castle’s video takes two wall panels apart, in white line art. Mobilcard’s promo is flat animation in Mobil blue, with real wheels.

Animation on top of real footage

In Bedpost’s ad, a football gets a face and arms, animated over the live footage. In the Baby Steps film, a goat and the brand’s lines are drawn over real toddlers.

Your own look, kept

A good studio animates the brand you already have. For Momentum Life, we used its own drawings. One green line draws each idea. We made the films in partnership with Virtual Innovation.

A version for every screen

From Crossware’s explainer we made tall and square versions. We also cut six short versions, of 12 to 29 seconds.

Questions about motion design

What does a motion design studio make?

At MoveUp Studio, it is logos, screens and characters that move. They go into our explainers, promos and a month of posts.

How much does motion graphics cost?

MoveUp Studio prices each video, not each minute. Every price is on our pricing page, with what each product includes.

Do you make 2D and 3D animation?

Yes. MoveUp Studio drew Simply Life’s films with soft 2D characters. For ANZ, in partnership with DDB, we made a soft blue character in 3D. Brookvale Union’s ads are cut-out collage.

Can you add motion graphics to our footage?

Yes. In Comply Pro’s product demo, MoveUp Studio animated the app’s screens over footage we shot on site. In two films for Auckland Transport, we made a road cone talk and wave among the real crews.

Do you make logo animation?

Yes. MoveUp Studio calls it a motion identity: how your logo and brand behave once they move. For the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, we turned its old logo into the new one. See our logo animation.

What else can you animate?

MoveUp Studio also animates for websites and apps, as Lottie files. We make email signatures that move, display ads and digital billboards. We can also build a motion brand kit: the moves and text styles your team reuses.

Do you use AI for motion design?

Behind the scenes, the same way MoveUp Studio uses any production tool. The design and the direction come from our team, and you approve every stage.

Should we hire a motion designer or use a studio?

Hire one once you have enough work to keep a designer busy every week. A good in-house designer beats MoveUp Studio on speed of reply and on knowing your product. Below that, you pay a salary for time you don’t use.

Do you animate for agencies?

Yes. MoveUp Studio works under your brand and doesn’t go direct to your client. Powerswitch’s promos, drawn in neon light, were made in partnership with Reason.
